Overcoming Stress in the Office

Working more than 40 hours each week and juggling a personal life is a difficult task for anyone, but at the beginning of your career it can be especially difficult.  The only way to maintain your sanity and keep your job is to find a perfect balance to deal with stress at work as well as at home.  When you’re able to find that perfect balance, a stressful day at work won’t seem like the end of the world; it’ll seem like a typical day at work.  Regardless of the industry in which you work, stress is inevitable and the sooner you’re able to deal with it, the sooner you can take over the world.
The first thing you should remember about overcoming stress is don’t take it personal.  If your boss just ripped you a new one because you made a mistake, own up to the mistake, apologize, and move on.  Don’t get emotional about your mistake, it’s not a personal attack on you and when you realize that you’ll be better prepared to accept criticism.  Unless you have proof that your boss is out to get you, accept the criticism and correct it to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Learning to walk away from a stressful situation will save your job and your peace of mind, after a stressful day.  This doesn’t mean you should walk away during a confrontation or stressful meeting, but if you feel that you’re becoming overwhelmed don’t be ashamed to step back and take a minute for yourself.  If possible, when you feel that the stress of your job is too overwhelming, talk a walk around the block or grab a cup of coffee form a nearby shop.  Don’t be ashamed to take a break and get yourself together, it’s more admirable than showing your boss and colleagues that you can’t handle your job.
When work becomes too stressful and you don’t release that stress, your personal relationships can suffer, the opposite is true as well.  Maintaining a perfect balance is incredibly difficult, especially if you haven’t found a healthy way to relieve the stress that can build up.  You have your entire commute home to work out your work stress so that you don’t have to deal with it when you walk into your home.  If that doesn’t work, talk about the stress with a friend or family member you trust.
When you aren’t at work, don’t stress about work.  Many spouses of workaholics complain that work is the only thing their spouses care about, which puts a tremendous strain on personal relationships.  Maintaining a healthy balance between the stress of work and home requires that you learn how to compartmentalize your emotions.  Don’t let personal problems affect your work, and don’t let the stress of your job affect your personal life.  You have to learn how to let it go if your goal is to have a long and successful career.
Maintaining a healthy balance of work and home life isn’t just one thing you do, it’s about finding small ways to lessen your stress throughout the day.  Other tips you might find helpful to keep the stress to a minimum are;
        Take lunch away from the office; it’s difficult to get away from the stress if you’re in the thick of it.
        Limit the amount of days you lunch with your co-workers.  This may seem cruel but when you lunch with co-workers the conversation inevitably turns to work.  When you’re away from work you shouldn’t think about it.
        Be as productive as possible during the day to limit the time you have to stay late at the office.
        Take your vacation time, don’t let it build up.  Your employer allows you vacation for a reason.
        When you’re sick; stay at home.  Unless your job really depends on it, take a day to focus on your health.
Following these tips and other relaxation methods will help you overcome stress from work.  If you find that nothing helps your stress, consider seeing a professional that can help you deal with your stress.
